The Rotman Award for Paediatric Home Care
Innovation
The Rotman Award for Paediatric Home Care Innovation has
been created to recognize successful and innovative home and
community health care programs serving children, youth and
families in Canada. The award is offered through the Children
and Youth Home Care Network (CYHN) which is sponsored by SickKids
Foundation.
This $100,000 award for innovation and best practice has
been made possible through a generous gift from Janis Rotman,
and is the first of its kind in Canada. The award will be
made to a Canadian non-profit organization delivering home
and community health care services to infants, children, youth
and their families.
The purpose of the Rotman Award is threefold:
- to recognize successful and innovative home and community
health care programs serving children, youth and families
in Canada.
- to identify and promote examples of best practice program
or organizational models from which other organizations
can learn
- to encourage further innovation in the winning organization
by awarding a cash prize
The next deadline for nominations is January 31, 2007.

Complementary and Alternative Health Care and Paediatrics
The Sick Kids Foundation's National Grants Program
has a grants program in the area of complementary and alternative
health care and paediatrics (CAHC). Through the Foundation,
funding is available for research grants and research cross-training
awards. We are also pleased to announce a Master's scholarship
program in complementary and alternative health care.
The Foundation has adopted the National Institutes of Health's
definition of CAHC, i.e. the broad domain of healing resources
that encompasses all health systems, modalities, and practices
and their accompanying theories and beliefs, other than those
intrinsic to the politically dominant health systems of a
particular society or culture in a given historical period.
Examples include but are not limited to: herbal medicine;
homeopathy; naturopathy; acupuncture; chiropractic; massage
therapy; relaxation techniques; osteopathy; and yoga.
CAHC Research Cross-training awards
Through the cross-training competition, researchers,
policy makers and health care providers (conventional, complementary
and/or alternative) may obtain a maximum of $10,000 annually
to support the increase of knowledge about research methodology
and techniques, particular paediatric issues, policy/ethical
issues, or some form of complementary or alternative care
provision for children. The goal of the proposed cross-training
must be to increase research capacity in paediatric complementary
and alternative therapies in Canada.

Launch of a new Canadian
CAM Research Network
Please visit our website at:
www.incamresearch.ca
We would like to invite you to become a member of the Canadian
Interdisciplinary Network for Complementary and Alternative
Medicine Research (IN-CAM). For years we have talked about
a national network to link researchers, students, practitioners,
policy makers and others interested in CAM research from across
Canada. We are very excited that it is finally happening with
funding from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR)
and the Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD), and invite
all of you to become active participants.
Our mission is to create a sustainable, well-connected,
highly trained CAM research community in Canada that is internationally
recognized and known for both its excellence in research and
its contributions to understanding CAM and its use. We encourage
anyone interested in CAM research including researchers, research
assistants, associates and administrators, students, practitioners
and policy makers to become IN-CAM members (membership is
free!). We are supportive of all types of CAM research, but
plan a special emphasis on research from a health services
or social science perspective.
Please go to our Website www.incamresearch.ca
for more information about IN-CAM and to become a member.
Our first Bulletin (attached) provides news and information
for those interested in Canadian CAM research.
Please help us build the Network by passing on this invitation
to interested colleagues and students.
We look forward to working with you all to build a vibrant
CAM research community.
